I've become interested in trying to do cylinder head work on my Bridgeport type mill. I've been reading "Time to complete competition valve job" and quite fascinated by the thread. Trouble is, its an older thread, there used to be some pics that guys posted of their setups but it seems the links are now dead.
With closed-chamber heads, every 0.010 inch machined off drops the chamber volume by 1.3 to 1.4 cc. Flat milling (as conventional head milling is called) of heads then leaves us with chambers at best 4.5 to 7 cc smaller. What this means is that flat milling usually only gets the heads to the 60-cc chamber volume point.
Dry milling is pretty much the only acceptable way to resurface late model cylinder heads and blocks and castings for racing applications. A belt sander, broach or grinder may have been good enough for resurfacing stock Chevy 350 heads years ago, but not for today's engines or for performance applications.
So if dry milling is the way to go, what type of surfacer should you get? The basic choices boil down to buying or leasing some type of dedicated surfacer, or moving up to a multi-purpose CNC machining center that can surface, bore, drill, tap, chamfer and clearance – and also port cylinder heads if you opt for a full 5-axis CNC machine.

How Much can these heads be safely milled? I am wanting about 11.0 CR on a stock,4.030 bored, 6.0. I am also thinking about MLS head gaskets. What thickness should these be?
