3. Hollow Grind (AKA Concave Grind) Description: A hollow grind sets the blade up to perform best as a precision slicing machine and it does this by removing a lot of the blade material in a concave shape. Hollow grinds provide for a very thin but razor-sharp edge which is probably why they're often found commonly on straight razors!
The hollow grind is ideal for cutting soft tissue, which is why it is found on skinners and scapels. Hollow grinds always have a secondary bevel. Without a secondary bevel, the edge on a hollow grind blade would be extremely fragile. Many custom knifemakers also favour a hollow grind, partially due to its ability to achieve a sharp edge.

Took the hollow all the way back to make a completely shoulderless grind. Been working on a batch of 5 7/8 razors, 4 wedges and this one hollow grind. Decided to freehand it and it came out good. Used some cork belts up to 800 grit to blend the belly into the edge grind but still left it quite distinct visually.

You can hone quite a few times before the hollow is gone and grinding is necessary. Sharpening should not require spending big money. IMO it is sold as a black art that needs all manner of paraphernalia that is designed to take cash that could be better spent on a new L-N 4 ½ or some nice cherry stock.
After grinding a hollow the front half was flattened in under 10 mins on a quite slow diamond plate You can probably see how scratching from a diamond plate stops somewhere at half the blade length. I'm not suggesting anyone should hollow grind their chisels. But if you want to mess around here's some pointers.

Hollow Grinding itself is more of a extreme sharp for straight razors and fine work but the edge is not strong compared to Convex. Personally I don't like Hollow Grind ...
