Benchmaster MV-1 Vertical Milling Machine This is a nice little Benchmaster MV-1 vertical mill. These little mills are highly sought after since they take up little space. Are a sturdy, very useful machine and made in the USA. I've had this one for over 4 years and it has served me well. It has leadscews on X, Y, and Z and not rack and pinion.
The Benchmaster is a neat little machine and quite capable. It came in several variations, horizontal and with a vertical head. The MV-1 designates a vertical mill, the vertical head might have gone missing, and just the horizontal capability remains. Does the mill have power feed, manual or lever (quick acting) feed?
The Index vertical had long before taken it's place but the Benchmaster was still taking up space. Quoting Jim Rozen: "That green benchmaster is cute as a bug, and probably about ten times better to use than a milling attachment on a lathe." I can attest to that. Made a milling attachment for my lathe about 10 years before I got the Benchmaster.

The basic difference between the earlier MV1 and the later. MVN vertical mills is the size of the knee/table elevating screw. D. C. Morrisson increased the size of the elevating screw so that up to 375 lbs. of load could be placed on the table of the later models as there were some failures of the elevating screw/nut on the earlier models.
I'm rebuilding my BenchMaster MV1 as it was too worn when I got it to do the work I want. But when done it will go on a 'cart/cabinet' that will include drawers for all the acoutrements as well as a chip shield around three sides. It will be on casters BUT when being used it will be on blocks just a bit taller than the casters.
Founded in 1929, Fehlmann AG are best known for their range of high precision drilling and milling machines produced from 1958 onwards. While manual drilling/milling machines are still presently made, Fehlmann mainly manufactures CNC machines with the first NC Picomax models being introduced in 1975.
I have a Benchmaster myself. It has a heavy table, and I scraped mine into good alignment, so it is pretty chatter-free, as mills that size go. But one of the usual advantages of a vertical mill these days IS the quill, and what having that does for you. I seriously question the price vs what you get as far as an actual machine.
