I collect old machine tools, and I bought a very cherry old Black and Decker valve grinder that came with what I will guess to be 1940s Van Dorn portable seat grinder. Everthing is complete with the exception of the 11/32s pilot. The pilot itself is there, but it has a small, three fingered expansion device at the end of it, and it's broken.

I live in a low-tech world...1950's Snap on/Black and Decker stuff with the original pilot guide spindle for flatheads. Seat grinder and valve grinder. That guide part and the stones and such are still readily available. In a higher tech world, one might copper plate and press in the guides and use a common guide.

Wear tolerance on the top of the pilot is .0015" and if you have wear on the top of the pilot and wear on the ID of the stone holder you are not going to be able to grind accurately or safely.

There are a few videos here black and decker valve grinder history - Bing video that are worth looking at as they are of similar models. From what I can see you are missing the diamond nibs for dressing the stones and their holders.

Yes it is an oil, and yes, it is cheap. However, transmission oil will actually attack the bond that holds the grains together, decreasing the life of your abrasive dramatically.
