Unsigned, "The Mill on the Floss," Saturday Review, vol. 9, April 14, 1860 "The riddle of life as it is here expounded is more like a Greek tragedy than a modern novel. In form we have the modern novel, with its every-day incidents and its humorous descriptions, but in spirit we have the Greek play, with its mysterious allusions and its ...
'The Mill on the Floss' is the story of Tom and Maggie Tulliver growing up in the Dorlcote Mill in the fictional village of St. Ogg's. It follows the life of these two siblings from childhood to adulthood. Published in 1860 the novel is considered Mary Anne Evan's (popularly known by her pen-name George Eliot) most autobiographical work.
The Mill on the Floss Introduction. The Mill on the Floss is George Eliot's the third major work of fiction and her second novel published in 1860. Before this novel, Eliot had published a book of short stories, the excitingly titled Scenes From a Clerical Life, and the novel Adam Bede. The Mill on the Floss was very successful and helped George Eliot achieve even greater fame.
Most of the negative reactions to The Mill on the Floss were to the second half of the book--the suddenness with which the tragedies occurred, the relationship between Maggie and Stephen, the deus ex machina quality of the ending. In response, Eliot would agree that "the tragedy is not adequately prepared," because she "was beguiled by ...
A complicated book that doesn't let the reader or its characters off easy, "The Mill on the Floss" deceives with what, for Eliot at least, seems a straightforward narrative. (To be sure, the book features about half-a-dozen important players, each with a story of his or her own, but it's nowhere as involved as "Middlemarch.")
Even F.R. Leavis in the modern age has described some of the characters depicted in her novels as mere outline sketches without any psycho-intellectual depth and socio-cultural moorings. But, a close and minute study of The Mill on the Floss reveals that such charges leveled against George Eliot's art are unfounded and reflect a lop-sided and ...

exing no less than vexed, Maggie Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss, is widely taken as the most autobiographical of George Eliot's heroines, and with good reason. "That little " (54) growing up at Dorlcote Mill near the town of St Ogg's, with her elder brother Tom, is clearly the focus for authorial reminiscence in the first brief chapter.
She wrote seven novels, Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Romola (1862–63), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871–72) and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of which are set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. Unforgettable. tbright 3 January 2000. Engaging, set in a historically rich time, Mill on the Floss (1997) is a memorable walk with thoroughly human characters. As it unfolds amid much background detail, the story becomes somewhat more real than simply an exercise in the willing suspension of disbelief.
The 28 Year Old James Mason. Single-Black-Male 31 October 2003. Mason plays the supporting role of Tom Tulliver in this adaptation of George Eliot's 'The Mill on the Floss'. Quite frankly, I didn't enjoy any of Eliot's novels so I wouldn't enjoy watching this film. Mason has a minor part, so it's not even worth watching anyway.
The Mill on the Floss is based around George Eliot's own experiences of provincial life, focusing on the struggles of the headstrong Maggie and her brother Tom Tulliver of Dorlecote Mill, St Oggs. Eliot needed no model for the brother-sister relationship at the heart of the novel, the novel widely being seen as semi-autobiographical.
A few years after Middlemarch I tried and liked Daniel Deronda. I'm pretty much interested in giving a try to any of Eliot's writing. The Mill on the Floss was next up. The book takes place in the fictional English village of St. Ogg's and focuses chiefly on siblings Tom and Maggie Tulliver, from childhood through young adulthood.

The Mill on the Floss. More than any of Eliot's other novels, The Mill on the Floss, her second novel, focuses on a single character:Maggie Tulliver.Considered one of Eliot's most complex creations, Maggie embodies both the tendency toward self-indulgence that Eliot condemns elsewhere and the earnest desire for moral achievement by renunciation of one's …
In "The Mill on the Floss", she accuses the dominance of the self recklessness, loose-living etc and stresses on the absoluteness of duty, renunciation endurance, etc. Her concept of morality is based on human values and the laws of human heart. Eliot attacks self-dominance in her novels. Egoism is at the centre of her novels.

Define tragedy? Did Shakespeare write Shakespeare's plays? Do you think Hamlet knows he is being listened to when he says 'To be, or not to be'? Do you think the ending of The Mill On The Floss is poor? Do you think there is any point to reading criticism? Does Malcolm Lowry overwrite his prose? Don't you think Hamlet is a bit long?
The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot As a Tragedy My first George Eliot novel. There has been one main reason why I haven't read The Mill on the Floss yet. I saw most of the 1998 film adaptation starring Emily Watson some years ago. That was how I discovered this book; I had heard of Middlemarch, but not of this work until I saw the film.
There are elements of tragedy in this novel. This is a coming of age novel at its core. It depicts both Tom and Maggie Tulliver through their childhoods, adolescence and adulthood through tragedy and hardships. The novel was published in 1860, but is set in the 1820s right after the ascension of the Prince Regent to George IV as King.
12%Many critics have seen Eliot as a tragic novelist, especially in The Mill on the Floss. Though the tragic is an essential concept for Eliot, to be sustainable in the modern post-Darwin era it is argued that she believes it must be revised and even democratized. Time is a crucial element in the novel's revisionary concept of the tragic.
The Mill on the Floss is an adaptation of the novel by George Eliot. I have not read the book and so I cannot say if the film is a good adaptation or not. Instead, I will try to view it as its own entity. The Mill on the Floss is a frustrating picture of a young woman caught between the constricting ties of family and her desire to forge ahead ...
