HI, I am looking to buy a Burke Millrite vertical mill and am looking at a model MV1. I've also seen MVN models for sale and wonder what the difference between them is. The quill feed is by a hand wheel, not a lever; I've read somewhere that wheel feed is better for brass and that is 99% of what I work with.
This page shows the steps taken to add a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) unit to my Burke #4 milling machine. I wanted complete variable speed and this was the least expensive method to obtain the desired control. The unit was delivered in this condition by UPS (their usual careful handling of packages). Fortunately nothing inside was damaged.
Tell me about that machine, please. I now have a 6x26 taiwan knee mill, very basic with no options on it. it seems to be accurate, more accurate than me, but it is so bare bones basic. My vise won't get all way back to the column, my rotab is too big for it, this taiwan machine was, I believe, when new was high quality,

Go find a mill. Your Burke #4 can take a heavier cut. Limited space, a Nichols with sliding-head, B&S #9 or NMTB spindle taper. Others with #9 B&S or 30, 35, better-yet 40-taper NMTB/.. or BT.. Are-Ate is about the same grab as B&S # 7 or MT #2. "Kinda pitiful" IOW. Too-light mills are not easier to use than stouter ones on light work.
A product of the U.S.-Burke Machine Tool Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, the "Millrite" was designed as a low-cost competitor to the established Bridgeport and other high-class makes of turret milling machine, the Millrite was of essentially simple but strong construction and offered - on the basis of one main column - several alternative head, ram and table assemblies.

Millrite Milling Machine. I was looking through Craigslist one afternoon for a milling machine when I came across a Powermatic-Burke Millrite Vertical Milling Machine. It looked exactly like what I was looking for, and as far as I could tell was as big as I would ever need. The motor on it was a 3/4 HP 3 phase motor, and the spindle took R-8 ...
A Burke #1 mill. It's been highly modified by a machinist to have full 3 axis control. (Normally these machines had lever feed.) No graduations on the handwheels but I am sure I can use a dial indicator for measurement. The spindle and arbor have been redone with an MT2 taper. Need to rig up a drive system, and use it to mill some slots and such.
Burke Horizontal Milling Machines 1. Introduction The history of Burke milling machines is not entirely clear. There seem to have been two general lines of small horizontal mills. Burke No. 0 (a very small bench unit) through the Burke No. 4 (a small but potentially quite well equipped pedestal-mounted unit
I think I have finally found the answer to the drill press/milling machine conundrum: the Powermatic (Burke) Millrite. This is a full-blown milling machine that is small enough to put in a garage, yet big enough to be hard to outgrow. If you have more room than you need for a drill press, but not enough for a Bridgeport, this is your machine.
