Coote probably makes the best two wheel grinder out there. It doesn't cost much more than the Kalamazoo. It's more flexible with more attachments. Some people use a Grizzly grinder and I know a smith who earned both his Journeyman's and Master's stamps with two of them but I would still take a Coote over both of them.

I have looked into Grizzly and Coote grinders, and the Coote ones seem better from what I have heard. Does what belt size you get (2x48 vs. 2x72) matter all that much? How much does contact wheel size matter (I'm not planning on doing much if any hollow grinding)? How difficult or expensive is it to rig up the right motor?

The pulleys they were asking about $40-50 each for ($90 total). So add about $175 to get it to your door with pulleys. Then you buy some adjustable v-belt for $30-40 and a motor. I'd say when it's all said and done, you're probably going to be around $900 (maybe cheaper if you get a cheaper motor).

That $50 at a junk yard can get you the motor, metal brackets, etc. you need to build a pretty good knife making grinder. There are lots of other tools to build in that book too.

Several months later I was able to get enough together to get my Coote grinder and I was lucky enough to find a stand that I could use at Amazon for $18.
