The cement and concrete industries are huge. What does this mean in terms of the environment? Concrete and other cementitious materials have both environmental advantages and disadvantages.
It does have a low toxicity level which can affect underwater organisms, and it does remain present for longer in soil and groundwater (sometimes weeks) than it does in the air. However, again, barring a significant spill or accidental release of the substance into a body of water, the harmful effects on the environment are not worrisome.
Fly ash can replace a percentage of portland cement in concrete, thus reducing the impacts of concrete while using a material that would otherwise be landfilled. The mercury and other heavy metals contained in fly ash have made the design and construction industry nervous about its use, however.
